Why bikes need teeth

So the plan was to finish the drivetrain off during the winter. Having plotted it so smartly on a lovely summer day, I relaxed and forgot about the issue until last Sunday, when some weird noises started coming from the cranks area. Well, the plan worked out pretty well, the drivetrain had been used until it couldn't take the smallest pressure applied to the pedals on a flat fire road (after giving up hills or singletracks 15 minutes earlier). Well, I would have tried to use it for one more trail, maybe it'd have survived another 5 minutes, but Claire thought of it sensible and signaled a retreat to the car park.

So, what seems to be a problem?
